Celebrating community employment outcomes


We've been delivering the Multicultural Employment Service for many years, and there's nothing as satisfying as seeing a client placed in a job they love. Work should be a source of pride, community building and skills development - but it can be a hard process to find the right job when moving to a new country.


Our team works with each client to ascertain their individual skills, experience and qualifications, and to match them with an employer.


Recently, we have celebrated some fantastic outcomes for our clients, that we wanted to share with you.


Case study : Nurrudin


Mohammed Nurrudin arrived in Canberra as an asylum seeker, following a period of time in an immigration detention centre. Nurrudin was seeking a better life in Canberra, and hoped to gain more work experience and training to continue his career in hospitality. Nurrudin's support worker from Companion House linked him with our team at Multicultural Hub Canberra's Employment Service. We worked with Nurrudin to update his resume and connect him with potential employers. Within 10 days of arriving in Canberra, Nurrudin was engaged in part-time work as a Laundry Attendant.


Case study: Daniel


Daniel is a young man from the Karen community, who was experiencing mental health issues and living with a disability. Daniel was seeking employment, and our Multicultural Employment Service team identified that Daniel could benefit from undertaking a Certificate II in General Construction, which we offered in partnership with Quality Training in Construction. Upon completion of the certificate, we saw that not only had Daniel's skills improved, but his confidence and self-esteem had too. We were able to find a role for Daniel through one of our long-term employer-partners, Tiger Waste. A former client of our employment service was working with Tiger Waste as a supervisor, having been placed there by Multicultural Hub Canberra as well, and he was able to play a mentor role to Daniel. Daniel has now been employed for several months, and is thriving in his new role, with positive feedback from his managers. Being able to work and use his skills has improved Daniel's mental health, and increased his connection to the community.
